After a relaxing warm up today, node08’s intense workshop program starts tomorrow. I have the pleasure to host the Beginners Workshop B together with Kathi - if you cannot be there, you can check the nearly live streaming node08 flickr group for consuming some impressions.

There are good things happening in Frankfurt. For example the node Festival, which will take part in April. Lectures, workshops, exhibitions and parties under the topic of digital art. Don’t miss it.

Ok that’s a lie. Due to acute lack of time it’s actually not a review, but I can tell you that it’s over and it was great. Turin is a lovely city, and the festival itself had a very personal atmosphere and was on a high level concerning the contents. Thanks a lot for the invitation to Nada and ToDo.

The IAA is already over for this year, but it’s still worth writing some lines about the impressive Mercedes Benz hall.
Heart of this completely modified hall was the “Carwalk” - a huge (50×15m) LED surface on the floor, where the silver cars were placed on. It was partly fed with interactive content by VVVV, realized by Atelier Markgraph and meso.
The whole atmosphere of the hall was really stunning, also because of a perfect combination of all components like light, interior design and moving images. But the total costs must be beyond my imagination…

Also remarkable was the presentation of Mini, where the Pfadfinderei did livevisuals for the complete duration.

Vera-Maria Glahn and Marcus Wendt, both students at the School of Arts and Design, Kassel did a nice project, which they self describe as an “interactive sound environment”:

“The Orbiter takes possession of all senses. It is a place for visitors to lay down and relax, watching the firmament above them. With a small gesture, just pointing upwards, the visitor can insert new stars into orbit with unique visual and musical characteristics. The player is enveloped by the instrument; the music filling the ears, the body and space.”

I like the concentric design, which is in this case implemented with Processing. And exceptionally very mentionable is also the exhibition version’s interior design, which can be seen here.
Unfortunately it can’t be figured out well of the documentation, if and how good the interaction really works.

Crustea, the self-appointed AntiVJ did a quite interesting installation at ClubTransmediale/Berlin. Exactly mapped projections are wrapping the 3dimensional surface:

Back from a way too short stay in Barcelona, I’m still filled with energy from this lovely city, and especially from the Sonar2007 - the exhibition there was quite impressive!
The installation which surprised me most was “delicate boundaries” from Chris Sugrue (currently working at Eyebeam): A tft screen in a black room shows nothing except white grubs. When (almost) touching it, some grubs are slowly searching their way to the hand and start to detach themselves from the screen and continue walking on the hand (enabled by projections from above). A way to play with technology people really seemed to like a lot.

Moving Brands and Chris O’Shea (blog) created an impressive installation for the launch of new KEF speakers. A 10×5 m LED screen was set up in the Sala del Cenacolo in Milan, which reacts to the given audio signal in a very organic way. The way the animation behaves fits the speaker’s design perfectly - and especially the reflections in the object itself are awesome!
