After a relaxing warm up today, node08’s intense workshop program starts tomorrow. I have the pleasure to host the Beginners Workshop B together with Kathi - if you cannot be there, you can check the nearly live streaming node08 flickr group for consuming some impressions.

Some pictures of the (successfull) Similar Diversity setup can be found here.

node08 / Frankfurt

Image

There are good things happening in Frankfurt. For example the node Festival, which will take part in April. Lectures, workshops, exhibitions and parties under the topic of digital art. Don’t miss it.

“Over the last 10 years, a community of Artists, Designers, Architects and technically interested people has evolved, thinking and working way beyond common patterns of media applications, looking forward to interpret cutting edge technologies and pushing it to its limits in the contexts of art and commercial projects.

Luminale Logo The hosts of NODE08 have been working in this realm for quite some time now, supporting the keen community with their multi-purpose software tool kit vvvv free of charge. The NODE08 festival provides an event to the ever growing vvvv community, to get to know each other, to present, to exchange and share with a curious and interested audience.”

PS: Casey Reas has just been announced as a speaker.

vvvv at the iaa2007
Saturday, 29. September 2007

The IAA is already over for this year, but it’s still worth writing some lines about the impressive Mercedes Benz hall.
Heart of this completely modified hall was the “Carwalk” - a huge (50×15m) LED surface on the floor, where the silver cars were placed on. It was partly fed with interactive content by VVVV, realized by Atelier Markgraph and meso.
The whole atmosphere of the hall was really stunning, also because of a perfect combination of all components like light, interior design and moving images. But the total costs must be beyond my imagination…

Also remarkable was the presentation of Mini, where the Pfadfinderei did livevisuals for the complete duration.
Respect :)

orbiter
Tuesday, 11. September 2007

Vera-Maria Glahn and Marcus Wendt, both students at the School of Arts and Design, Kassel did a nice project, which they self describe as an “interactive sound environment”:

“The Orbiter takes possession of all senses. It is a place for visitors to lay down and relax, watching the firmament above them. With a small gesture, just pointing upwards, the visitor can insert new stars into orbit with unique visual and musical characteristics. The player is enveloped by the instrument; the music filling the ears, the body and space.”

I like the concentric design, which is in this case implemented with Processing. And exceptionally very mentionable is also the exhibition version’s interior design, which can be seen here.
Unfortunately it can’t be figured out well of the documentation, if and how good the interaction really works.

meso

As promised, meso relaunched the website: meso - digital interiors
A lot of great humour in the details - as actually expected from people naming nodes after Taxi Driver actors!

delicate boundaries
Wednesday, 20. June 2007

Back from a way too short stay in Barcelona, I’m still filled with energy from this lovely city, and especially from the Sonar2007 - the exhibition there was quite impressive!
The installation which surprised me most was “delicate boundaries” from Chris Sugrue (currently working at Eyebeam): A tft screen in a black room shows nothing except white grubs. When (almost) touching it, some grubs are slowly searching their way to the hand and start to detach themselves from the screen and continue walking on the hand (enabled by projections from above). A way to play with technology people really seemed to like a lot.

More short reviews and of course photos coming up in the next couple of days.

moving brands muon launch
Sunday, 29. April 2007

Moving Brands and Chris O’Shea (blog) created an impressive installation for the launch of new KEF speakers. A 10×5 m LED screen was set up in the Sala del Cenacolo in Milan, which reacts to the given audio signal in a very organic way. The way the animation behaves fits the speaker’s design perfectly - and especially the reflections in the object itself are awesome!

update: Chris O’Shea published a documentation on his website.

black spot
Monday, 16. April 2007

Black Spot is a project by Phil Coy:
“The first stage was to obtain a Satellite image of an area - in this instance Hyde Park, London. The second was to pinpoint a single pixel on that photograph and replace it with a black square of Polythene. The third was to take a second satellite photograph of the same area.”

I think he should have called it “dead pixel“…
