frankfurt’s museums
Sunday, 16. September 2007

…are definitely worth a visit. Best spots to go so far:
MMK - ugly from the outside, but great collection inside!
Schirn Kunsthalle - nice, changing exhibitions. Currently the “John Bock Films” can be recommended.

toilets 2006-2007
Wednesday, 25. July 2007

Yes, perhaps a strange way of recapitulating past events. But it works.
Being on a public toilet can be quite boring, so I started taking photos of this boring looking doors I was staring at. I’m doing this for about one year now, and I think it’s a good point to release the first “results”. The rules:
- every toilet is photographed when visiting it the first time
- the point of view is authentic and the image is not being composed in any way
- take the time to name the image correctly or you’ll forget the details…

If you’re visiting Frankfurt in the next month, don’t miss the Op Art exhibition.
By the way, I didn’t Frankfurt expect to be beautiful, but it definitely is!

The Subconscious Art of Graffiti Removal
Friday, 6. April 2007

grafitti

I recently tumbled over an interesting (and artistical) documentary which deals with the removal of graffiti by overpainting them. This seems to be a big thing in the USA, especially in Portland - I’ve not yet recognized something like that in this dimension in Europe.
The Movie is directed by Matt McCormick and spoken by the gorgeous Miranda July*. So, if you wonder where to get it, have a look at this great blog.

reminds me of: urban curators

* did I already mention that you absolutely have to watch me and you and everyone we know?

dual photography: seeing around corners
Monday, 2. April 2007

dual photography

Dual photography? Not easy to understand…

“Let’s say there’s some hot naked chick standing by a window, except she’s facing away from it so all you can see is her back. She’s watching NBC.
Luckily, you’re the president of NBC. You make a phone call and tell the network to interrupt programming and instead send out a video that illuminates each pixel, one at a time, in order.
While this is going on, you record the wall behind her TV. Your crappy video camera has only a 1×1 pixel resolution, but this doesn’t matter. Do a bunch of math based on your recording, and you can reconstruct an image of what she looks like from the TV’s point of view. If her TV has a 1920×1080 resolution, you get a clear, 1920×1080, hi-res image.
So see? Without this technology, you wouldn’t get to see what her boobs look like.” (raldi at reddit)

The official video shows it up visually, especially at the end. Sounds amazing!

passing time (more updates)
Sunday, 18. March 2007

Photography seems to be the perfect medium for documenting the passing of time. Some examples:

Very nice: “In the meantime” by Alexandra Hager.

older posts
5. Noah Kalina also does it. Everyday. The first six (depressed?) years: Link

4. Awesome, c71123 made a video out of 8 years of his life.

3. Age-Maps by Bobby Neel Adams.

2. Another video, also dealing with this topic: Link

1. I just found a website which reminded me of a video I saw a few months ago at habedieehre (see below). The project “zwanzig-vierzig” from Michael Harms shows the passed time in a, for me, very emotional way. As you can already guess from the title, he made a photo from his friends when they were 20 years old, and one when they were 40. An impressive persistent work. And here the work by ahreelee: Link
