Very beautiful.

And almost no categories to put it in. I should rethink something…

or: Ben van Berkel meets meso. Portikus/Frankfurt 2007.

ampop during the setup

In the last month I was part of a really nice project here in Frankfurt. Let’s start with some official words:
“Ben van Berkel & the Theatre of Immanence is a combined art and architectural exhibition wherein the different parts in the exhibition are synthesised into a complete whole. The exhibition stages a theatre or space of communication: communication between the visitors and the exhibited works, between the virtual and the real, between the different visitors in the gallery and between the different parts in the exhibition. Throughout its period, the architectural installation will serve as a hub for various events including lectures, art performances, and hosted talks with invited guests, DJ-sessions that are to be broadcast and more.”

Our part was developing a solution for projecting on the piece of architecture, and developing and implementing the interaction. We created a vvvv application which enables us to use the 3dimensional surface for our projections in a very comfortable way, and allows to using more than typical 2d content but also things like volumetric textures and virtual lights. We called it “a case study in augmented architecture”. It is an attempt to create a reactive surface of extraordinary spatial complexity.
The interaction works over the internet - you can try it here (only when the exhibition is opened).
The exhibition ends on January 13th.

Some of my photos made during the setup (that’s why the projections are not fitting perfectly!):

LevelHead - spatial memory
Saturday, 20. October 2007

A fascinating new kind of gameplay, shows us Julian Olivier’s Levelhead. This new hybrid gaming form, in this case by combining analogue motions with digital content, will probably offer us a lot of future fun:

“levelHead is a spatial memory game by Julian Oliver. It uses a cube - with an image on each face - as its only interface.
It uses a single webcam (EyeToy) to capture the image and a screen to present the computed result.
‘Inside’ the cube are six rooms, each of which are logically connected by a network of doors. By tilting the cube you lead
a character around the rooms.”

meso

As promised, meso relaunched the website: meso - digital interiors
A lot of great humour in the details - as actually expected from people naming nodes after Taxi Driver actors!

Similar Diversity stats
Thursday, 23. August 2007

Similar Diversity was quite successful the last days, since being posted at infostethics and visualcomplexity - what makes it my first really interesting project at Google Analytics.
Thanks to that technique, I’m able to tell you funky facts, like that the average Uruguayan visitor stays on our site for more than 25 minutes! Followed by Indonesia, 17 minutes and Kyrgyzstan, 12 minutes.
People from Kagoshima even managed to averagely view 13 out of our 4 pages!

More joyful news soon :)

censorship 2.0
Saturday, 5. May 2007

What would you do if your biggest secret is published in the web? Perhaps you would try to sue the persons in charge, or at least force them to delete it. Or you would avoid talking about it.
They forced them to delete the user posted secret, which is in this case the processing key to crack the HD DVD and Bluray Disc copy protection! And so they did.
But they didn’t expect the energy of their huge community, which posted and commented the key again and again, to prevent its oblivion.
Digg’s reaction:

“But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be.
If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying.”

Perhaps they’ll get a problem - but at the moment they’re getting huge popularity, because the story went round the blogosphere quickly.
And the code… well… t-shirts, coffeecups and flickr groups available. Just use a search engine.

The power of the masses is starting to become scary, but prohibiting the publishing of numbers does too.

miranda july: bookrelease
Sunday, 29. April 2007

I never missed an opportunity for mentioning Miranda July, and I won’t now:
She’s releasing her first second book on May 15th, and announces this with a very lovely and creative website: noonebelongsheremorethanyou.com
I like her point of view as far as I know it, and am looking forward to find out more about it :)

Found in Flo’s bookmarks (nice portfolio by the way!)

windy website
Saturday, 24. March 2007

Nice idea:

windWindMaker is an ambient weather widget that applies the current wind conditions to your Web site. First, it uses a United States ZIP Code to grab local conditions from the Yahoo Weather RSS feed. Second, it parses your Web site into individual pieces such as text blocks and images. Finally, WindMaker sets the pieces in motion according to the strength of the wind.”

Watch my site with NY’s current wind situation.
